The Bushansky lock - page of Bush
The Bushansky lock (fortress) was put in the middle of the 16th century by the hetman Jan Zamoysky. The lock had six towers connected among themselves by underground tunnels. Besides, under each of them there was a powder warehouse.
When Bush's village was a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and received the status of the city, on it the Crimean Tatars, and then and Poles as the city became boundary began to make attacks. The lock took part in the last defense in 1654. Inhabitants with rage and persistence reflected attack behind attack of the Polish troops, strengths of defenders of the lock thawed. When it became obvious that Cossacks won't be able to beat off the attack, the widow of the centurion Zavisny Marjan made the decision - to destroy the lock. It set fire to powder warehouses and all who were in the lock died from powerful explosion. He swept also away a considerable part of troops of forwards.
The fortress remains - a monument to pride, courage and will of Cossacks who sought to protect the earth at any cost. Which will die rather, than will be given on favor to the aggressor. Today the lock began to be restored. By some miracle one of fortress towers escaped, besides the part of underpasses which are open for visit of tourists remained.
